Baby Showers | The Journal of Daisy Cupcakes

Having a baby has got to be the most amazing thing in the world. And celebrating a birth is a very important step for new parents, welcoming the new addition into their family.

The concept of ?The Baby Shower? has become increasingly popular in recent years. Originally an American tradition, more and more parents to be are organising a family and friends get together before the baby is born, perhaps as much to make the most of life without a baby as to receive useful gifts for them.

I have been asked to create cakes for several baby showers over the last couple of years. Sometimes the sex of the baby is known so the colour and style of the cakes will be chosen accordingly, but other times, (I like this the most), the parents have chosen not to know what ?flavour? baby they are having. So the cakes are usually then a mixture of pastel blue, pink and lemon to cover all bases.

This week, I have created some pretty cake toppers to sit on top of lots of lovely vanilla bean cupcakes for a baby shower this weekend. In baby blue, pale pink and lemon, they will make a lovely centre piece on the table.

Buttons, bows, prams, frilly flowers and alphabet blocks all sit on top of a fondant disc ? all edible of course ? and the disc will then sit on top of a perfect creamy, whipped buttercream swirl. Delicious.

There will be photos of the finished cakes on our Facebook page tomorrow, after they have been collected.

Hope it?s a fabulous weekend for you and an amazing September ? Daisy Cupcakes x

After 28.5M iOS Downloads, ESPN Launches A Faster, All-New ScoreCenter For iPad

ESPN ScoreCenter logoGoogle's report today shows just how integral the multiscreen experience has become in the consumption of digital content. For content of the athletic variety, it seems even more substantial. I struggle to watch baseball games without obsessively checking stats, figures on my tablet or tweeting from my phone. Many of us try to support startups or smaller app developers when it comes to multiscreen experiences, but ESPN is making a serious play for your mobile attention. Since launching in 2010, ESPN's ScoreCenter -- which delivers live scores, news and standings just about every sports league to your mobile devices -- has been downloaded 28.5 million times on iOS devices. While popular, the user experience has been far from perfect. So, it started from scratch and is today launching a complete overhaul of ScoreCenter for the iPad, meant to improve the app's speed, utility and personalization as the first of its apps to fully utilize its new API program.

Dell's XPS 10 Tablet Is What a Laptop/Tablet Hybrid Is Supposed to Look Like [Tablets]

There are a lot of hybrid tablets coming out this fall. But while the ones we've seen seem to be splitting the difference, Dell seems to be focusing on the best parts of either laptop or tablet. Its XPS 10 is the tablet end of that bargain. More »

Metropolis - Arts & Entertainment | Yoshitomo Nara

Miss Spring (2012); ? NARA Yoshitomo Photo by: KIOKU Keizo

For better or worse, Yoshitomo Nara?s art has become part of the new face of Japan, a country that is now associated with manga, otaku, and all things kawaii, rather than the outmoded salaryman stereotypes of the 20th century.

It is a Japan that can?t so much say ?No? to America as one that instead rolls its oversized anime eyes, bites its lip childishly, and says, ?Goo!? In this sense Nara?s art, with its cartoon-like depictions of cute little girls with a hint of naughtiness and a touch of evil, is a perfect fit for the image of the new, infantilized Japan?several removes from its proud samurai past.

But there have been signs that this artistic approach has not really been working for Nara, especially when things ?get serious? as they clearly did last year with the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. In the aftermath of that mega-tragedy, painting cutesy caricatures of little girls must have seemed redundant, which is why he stopped painting for several months.

The large solo exhibition of his work at the Yokohama Museum of Art charts his route back to painting via sculpture, a new medium of expression for the artist. Subtitled ?A bit like you and me?? the exhibition seems to be employing the same techniques as Nara?s subjects by trying to be cute and appeal to our sympathy, before getting up-close-and-personal with a life-sized recreation of his studio.

But interesting as this is, the artistic reality is that there are serious flaws with the giant sculptures that form this exhibition?s centerpiece. The key point about Nara?s art has always been its cartoonish two-dimensional quality. Transposing the flat spaces and na?ve lines of his little ladies into 3-D creates something gross and off-putting.

There is a whole room of these swollen-headed monstrosities at the exhibition, but, in accord with the wheedling, emotionally manipulative vibe of the show, we are encouraged to judge them not purely as artworks but also as ?therapy pieces? that helped Nara return to painting. Actually, they might have achieved this simply by demonstrating what an abysmal sculptor he is.

As for his new drawings and paintings, some of them like Miss Spring (2012) show signs of an enriched palette, with a few added touches of color in the hair and glitter in the eyes, but essentially his latest works show no advance or development. These are still the same iconic, naughty, little imps he was painting 20 years ago; nebulous enough for visitors to associate with their own ?mischievous darlings.?

The earthquake threw Nara out of his cozy stride and even temporarily into the heroic world of sculpture, but this exhibition shows that normal service has been resumed. Imagine a toddler who gets upset and bawls her head off for a few minutes before getting a nice candy from her mum. Instantly, the dark shadows are dispelled, and the sunshine smile is resumed, perhaps with a hint of a cunning, manipulative leer. That naughty little miss is Yoshitomo Nara.

Yokohama Museum of Art, until Sep 23 (listing).

Video: At convention, Romney campaign emphasizes diversity

>>> back here at this gop convention in tampa, florida, we thought we'd get a sense of this convention floor, even though we're really in ernest just underway this one night. chuck todd is in the midst of the michigan delegation. you see everybody else there, chuck, beginning with michigan , i saw they had some gerald ford commemorative michigan wolverines football jerseys tonight. i thought that was a nice touch in honor of the years of service he put into the republican party in the united states .

>> he is a 230rformer all american. and it is michigan that got the coveted front row spot, where mitt romney was born. not the state he governed nor the state he spends a lot of time in now, new hampshire . right now, we're showing you the northern mariana islands . they left off the s on the poster there. the virgin islands got good access here. new hampshire good access. as you know, in conventions, republicans have been praised for having diversity on the podium, but not diversity in the audience. the audience made sure their most diverse delegation got good front row seats so when the cameras pan, you will see a more diverse audience. of course, one thing to remind you, all of these folks in guam, the u.s. virgin islands , none of their votes count in november.

>> chuck todd down there at the michigan delegation. brings us to andrea mitchell over in new hampshire . andrea?

>> reporter: well, speaking of diversity, the romney campaign knows they have a gender gap , they have a problem. they're going to try to solve that, partly by showcasing a lot of women. they have a diverse group of rising stars in the party, they have new mexico governor susannah martinez, south carolina governor , nikki haley , and tonight from new hampshire , these great college kids that are here. later tonight, kelly ayod is going to be here. they don't want to talk about todd akin , they're going to talk about economic issues, and specifically joe dailey, he has a landscaping business in new hampshire . she wanted to practice the speech for him, he said he wanted it to be a surprise. he'll hear it tonight for the first time.

>> andrea mitchell in new hampshi hampshire . john yang has made it up 95 to the great state of maine . the krcredentials committee stripped the state of ten ron paul zedelegates. ron paul will not be speaking at the convention because he didn't want to endorse him, and he didn't want his speech vetted by the romney campaign. his supporters are making themselves heard, they're angry about the fact that the rules changes that the romney camp is pushing through this convention. one oklahoma delegate told me they have just made all the activists mad. even though ron paul is not speaking here, he will be in the hall tomorrow night to hear one member of his family speak, senator rand paul will address the convention, and ron paul will be here to hear it.

>> we had some very vocal ron paul supporters at our booth today. and now to luke russert who's made his way to the great state of west virginia .

>> reporter: festive garb has been a tradition here. folks from colorado putting the west in mountain west , eastern american samoa wearing their traditional garb. and you all saw michigan , gerald ford , the iconic jersey from america's postage lettic president. and here in west virginia , a state that loves domestic energy and is very proud of their coal miners they're wearing a hard hat to honor those folks that live in that state. they are bringing a little bit of their home state to tampa.

>> give our best to west virginia . luke russert rounding out the coverage.

>>> our prime time coverage starts tonight with mrs. romney 's speech to this gathering, and the keynote by chris christie from new jersey. that's beginning tonight at 10:00 eastern, 7:00 pacific.

(AP) ? With Isaac bearing down on New Orleans, the city finds itself at a delicate moment in its rebuilding since Hurricane Katrina struck seven years ago.

Private and government investment is fueling the push to overhaul some of the city's troubled but culturally rich neighborhoods near the French Quarter, where poor families are being replaced as wealthier ones move in. While the city's in a boom and even gentrifying, some question whether it will wither the roots that grew the city's distinctive identity.

"New Orleans is becoming a boutique city like San Francisco," said Gary Clark, a politics professor at Dillard University. "You may see black middle class moving in, but with gentrification there's overwhelmingly white individuals of means who become the new urban pioneers."

The number of whites, although smaller than before Katrina, has grown as an overall percentage from 28 percent to 33 percent of the city's population. The city has its first white mayor since the 1970s, while the City Council now has a majority of white members.

On the flip side, blacks say there's danger that their community will be diminished in a city that owes deep cultural and economic debts to its Afro-Caribbean roots. Since the storm the African-American community has shrunk by about 118,500 people, dropping from about 68 percent of the population to about 60 percent.

"(Blacks) don't see themselves as being a part of the recovery economy and getting real opportunity," said Nolan V. Rollins, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans president.

It's not clear what effect Isaac could have on the city. On Tuesday afternoon, the storm had become a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph.

Isaac was expected to come ashore near New Orleans by early Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Katrina's devastating strike on the city.

This winter the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to demolish the last of the New Deal-era public housing still standing in New Orleans ? the 850-unit Iberville complex. It was erected over the slums of what was for a time the nation's only legal red-light district, Storyville.

The demolition is part of a $31 million HUD "choice neighborhoods" project, a concept pushed by the Obama administration across the nation. HUD hopes that by starting the process of gentrification, private investment will follow and the communities will become desirable places for all races and classes to live in.

Linda Couch, a public housing expert at the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, said the new approach "has the elements of success."

Meanwhile, another $4 billion in private and government investment has been pouring into the historic neighborhoods of Iberville and Treme, the hearth of the city's African-American culture.

The 1.4 square miles where much of the redevelopment is occurring has long been known for gumbo, jazz, voodoo and civil rights pioneers. Immigrants from around the world lived side by side with blacks in Treme and Iberville, where Louis Armstrong once walked the streets and delivered coal as a boy.

But the entire area fell on hard times after the 1960s, as whites moved to the suburbs and bad urban planning took its toll. By the time Katrina hit, it was struggling and looked like an urban desert of blight, drugs and abandonment in many areas.

The plan for redeveloping the area could include the removal of a noisy concrete interstate expressway that runs through Treme with the hope of restoring what was one of the city's main streets for black commerce. Work is already underway to turn an unused rail corridor into a miles-long walking and bike path called the Lafitte Greenway, turning old schools into new charters and opening "fresh-food" supermarkets.

Taking down the Iberville housing complex is crucial, planners say, to connect Treme with the downtown's theater and business district on Canal Street.

"I think we can retain the soul of New Orleans and in fact enhance it by going through this process," said David Gilmore, a HUD housing expert leading the planning effort.

Many residents see a chance to save neighborhoods that have fallen prey to drugs, poverty and blight.

"We're happy if someone moves down the street into a blighted property," said Jennifer Jones, the self-styled "queen of the second-line" and member of a Treme family of musicians. "No one's angry about whites moving in. When we grew up, there was a lot of mixing going on," Jones said.

But others are apprehensive.

"Maybe they've got their reason," said Lionel Glenn, a 69-year-old retired laborer who ended up at Iberville after another project he was in was torn down after Katrina. "I'd like to stay, but I've got to move."

A recent article in a black community newspaper, The New Orleans Tribune, blared: "They're here" in referring to whites looking to buy up inner-city property. The headline read: "Gentrification: The New Segregation."

Unlike the other redevelopments after Katrina, HUD promises to find housing for all the 440 families at Iberville within about 1 mile of the project.

After Katrina, most of the city's projects were torn down quickly and families were dispersed across the nation. Advocates charged that policy forced poor families out of New Orleans. Public housing units were cut in half at those complexes.

"What has happened is exactly what many people predicted would happen," said Lance Hill, who runs the Southern Institute for Education and Research, a race relations center at Tulane University. "Blacks have ended up in apartments ringing the city."

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says there is no reason to fear the redevelopment.

"We're building it back better than it ever was before and the way it always should have been."

In Treme, there are about 200 more white households than before Katrina, Census data shows. Newcomers and old-timers have clashed, even at times over the noise from the impromptu second-lines, the cherished musical parades, which routinely break out. Also, longtime residents worry about the closing of neighborhood bars.

"They are looking for a French Quarter look-a-alike but with a bedroom community feel," said Al Jackson, a Treme resident and historian.

One newcomer is David Williams, a 49-year-old school administrator. He bought an historic home that for now he rents out. The last batch he rented to was a group of young people with Americorps.

Once their son leaves home, he and his wife have talked about moving into the city and living in the house they've bought.

"In 10 years (this neighborhood) is going to look like Treme does a block away from the French Quarter," he said.

Exterior Lighting: Energy Efficiency and Style | DirectBuy Home ...

Outdoor lighting fixtures should serve aesthetic and functional purposes for the backyard and front lawn. When talking about exterior lights, efficiency and style are probably the most important features for home owners.

Solar Energy Lighting Options

A great way to minimize the use of electricity for outdoor lighting is to install solar powered lighting fixtures. Small path lights are the most common solar landscape lighting fixtures available today. These compact fixtures are known as stake lights, and they operate completely on solar power. The stake lights are equipped with solar panels and cells that power small LED lightbulbs when darkness settles in. Solar powered lights eliminate any electrical wiring and they can be easily placed and removed anywhere in the ground. Solar stake lights may offer enough illumination all night long, as the charged solar cells can power the low watt LED light bulbs for up to ten hours.

Timers For Outdoor Lights

Another trick for saving money on exterior lighting costs is to install timers. Mechanical timers can be physically hardwired to multiple outdoor lighting fixtures that are powered by traditional electrical wires. The timers can be set to turn the landscape lights on and off at certain times. Many outdoor timers have heavy duty protective housings that can withstand tough conditions including precipitation.

Motion Sensors In Exterior Lights

Motion sensing technology allows for efficient use of outdoor lights. Motion sensors are commonly integrated into lighting fixtures that are mounted onto a garage or the entrance door of a home. The sensors have a functional range of dozens of feet, so they will turn on the lights as a car pulls up a driveway or as a person walks towards the entry door. Motion detector lights significantly use less energy because they are literally turned on only for several minutes. Depending on the brand, motion sensor outdoor lights are usually programmed to turn off a few minutes after detecting movement. Such outdoor lights should be tested to ensure that they actually detect movement and that they are mounted at the correct angle on the garage awning or home exterior wall.

Adding Aesthetic Appeal With Outdoor Lights

Outdoor lighting fixtures can add plenty of appeal to a home?s property because they are available in an array of styles. The lantern design is one of the most popular styles of outdoor lights. Lanterns can be either mounted to an exterior wall or supported by a free standing post that is secured to the ground. Lantern lights are typically made from durable metals such as iron, bronze, die-cast aluminum, steel, and other alloys. The metallic frame of the lantern is carved with intricate patterns and textures that provide classic appeal.

Outdoor lanterns have transparent or frosted type glass housings that may support a variety of light bulbs that vary in wattage rating, size, and illumination technology such as LED and CFL. The transparency of the glass housing will determine how much light will diffuse through. Lantern lighting fixtures are designed to provide plenty of illumination from a height, unlike the smaller path lights. The post style lantern fixtures are miniature versions of street lights commonly installed in busy urban settings. Such outdoor lights add plenty of sophistication to a homeowner?s property.

Cool And Fun Outdoor Lights

Novelty outdoor lights can add plenty of cool and fun character to your garden and front lawn. Novelty lights are available in a variety of interesting themes, and they are not reserved just for holiday use. Some novelty lights can be mounted onto exterior walls while others can hang off strings such as holiday lights.

When installing outdoor lighting fixtures, try to create the right balance between energy efficiency and style. Solar power, motion sensors, and timers can save you plenty of money on powering your outdoor lights.

The Innate Chewing Habit of Dogs | Love My Pets GPS Pet Safety ...

August 27, 2012 ? Jerry Welsh

Destructive chewing is one of the unwanted habits of a dog. A puppy owner may tolerate the chewing behavior of the pet as it will be attributed to teething. Anything that can be reached will be chewed by the puppy because the action soothes the pup?s sore gums and strengthen the jaws. Additionally, puppies are very inquisitive creatures and in the absence of hands, the mouth and the teeth will be used to investigate things.

At the age of three months, the puppy start chewing excessively because the teeth would start to come out. The chewing habit will persist until the puppy is about six to ten months old. The puppy is expected to have finished teething at 10 months. As such, it will be noticed that the pup?s excessive chewing is lessened more so if the owner have trained the dog to have other habits. In some dogs though the habit to chew will worsen. As the dog is now endowed with strong teeth, it would be very easy for the pet to be destructive.

In older dogs, destructive chewing can be due to other reasons. Boredom is the most common reason for the dogs destructive chewing behavior. Being social animals, dogs would need interaction with other dogs or attention from the human family. Boredom that causes the dog to be destructive sets in when the dog is left alone for quite some time with no toys to play with. Bored dogs would try to gain the attention of the owners by barking excessively or by peeing and defecating inside the house. Another manifestation of the dog?s boredom is excessive chewing that results to the destruction of the belongings of the family.

Dogs are known to form strong attachments with the owner thus when separated from the family they normally suffer separation anxiety. Dogs would suffer from separation anxiety at the death of the owner or when the owners transferred to another home leaving the dog behind. The change in routine can result to the development of destructive chewing habit.

Making the puppy understand what can be safely chewed can prevent the development of destructive chewing habit when the pet matures. Dogs, no matter how intelligent cannot be expected to know which objects can be chewed and which objects are forbidden. It is the responsibility of the owner to teach the pet discriminative chewing. The pet must be given chew toys instead of things that are no longer used by the family.

Why do dogs chew? This innate habit can be a real problem. At Sarah?s Dogs however you can learn more about this and other dog behaviours.

(AP) ? Lydia Ko made some more history ? and made it clear that she has no plans to rush into a professional golf career.

The 15-year-old Ko is used to questions about her future, and she handled the latest round with ease Sunday after running away with the Canadian Women's Open to become the youngest winner in LPGA Tour history and only the fifth amateur champion.

"I'll still remain an amateur and then finish high school and then go to college," said Ko, who has mentioned Stanford as her college of choice. "I mean this is a great win, but I don't think this will affect me changing my roots to my career."

The South Korean-born New Zealander closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-stroke victory. She broke the age record of 16 set by Lexi Thompson last September in the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama, and is the first amateur winner since JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdine's Invitational.

"To break another record, or being in the history, it's amazing, and it's always awesome to be able to play with the pros," Ko said. "The last few holes, it got a bit nerve wracking, but Stacy Lewis, after my birdie on 15, she said, 'You know you can do it.' It was really great to have another player that I look up to giving me that much support. So it was really awesome."

In January, Ko won the New South Wales Open in Australia at 14 to become the youngest player to win a professional tour event, a mark broken by 14-year-old Brooke Henderson in June in a 36-hole Canadian Women's Tour event in Quebec. Ko also won the U.S. Women's Amateur two weeks ago in Cleveland.

"I didn't cry after this one," said Ko, but (after) that one I did cry," Ko said, referencing the Amateur. "Yeah, to me, U.S. Amateur is a big event, and obviously this is a huge event as well. But still, as an amateur winning one of the biggest amateur events, I feel like it was a better win ? even though this one was awesome."

Ko finished at 13-under 275 at The Vancouver Golf Club, pulling away with birdies on five of the first six holes on the back nine. She opened with consecutive 68s and shot a 72 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.

"I was most impressed with just her demeanor," said Lewis, who tied for sixth at 7 under. "I mean you would have never known that it was the final round of an LPGA event. She played like she had been there before."

Inbee Park shot a 69 to finish second. Park chipped in for birdie on the final hole, and Ko closed with a bogey to make it closer.

"The pressure she was handling is really amazing," Park said. "I'm really happy for her. It's great for her career ? and I think I was just lucky to get the winner's check today."

Park's $300,000 check as the top pro moved her past Lewis for the season money lead with $1,419,940.

U.S. Women's Open champion Na Yeon Choi, Chella Choi and Jiyai Shin tied for third at 8 under. Na Yeon Choi had a 73, and Chella Choi and Shin shot 71.

The glove Ko wore in the final round will be displayed in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

"To have something that's mine to be up there, it's amazing, and it doesn't come down or anything," she said. "So it will always remain there, and it'll be a good memory. It's been an awesome week."

Ko was headed to her native South Korea on Monday, and will return to the tour next month for the Women's British Open.

Kean urges Indian owners to laugh at Pedersen jibe

Blackburn boss Steve Kean called on the club's Indian owners to see the funny side of Morten Gamst Pedersen' cheeky goal celebration in their 2-1 win over Leicester.

Pedersen's superb strike on Saturday confounded Rovers' global adviser Shebby Singh, who earlier this month labelled the Norwegian "a pensioner".

The 30-year-old midfielder celebrated his strike by grabbing a walking stick from the touchline in a humourous dig at Singh's criticism.

"I don't know where he got that from or if he pre-planned it with our kitman but it's just a bit of tongue-in-cheek and it should be taken the way it's meant to be," said under-pressure Kean.

The Rovers boss admitted his side weren't at their best, but saw promising signs for the future following last season's relegation from the Premier League.

"I don't think we were in full flow, but it's the sign of a good team if you're not right at the top end of your game and you can still win and grind out results," he said.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway shrugged off suggestions in-form winger Thomas Ince might be on his way out of Bloomfield Road after turning in another eye-catching performance in the Tangerines' 6-0 demolition of Ipswich.

Ince scored twice and set up three goals, but Holloway remains confident that former England captain Paul Ince will convince his son that his immediate future remains at Blackpool.

"The transfer deadline doesn't bother me because he's got his dad who understands what is best for him," said Holloway.

"He knows that Tom needs games to develop and he's at a very good place at Blackpool to do that. I had a conversation with his dad and he wants his boy to stay here."

Ipswich boss Paul Jewell suggested that the 6-0 scoreline was cruel on his team, but he expects Blackpool to be near the top come the end of the season.

"They've had the same group of players together for a long time now and you can tell in the way that they play," he explained.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones paid tribute to unsung striker Chris O'Grady as the Owls retained second place after coming from behind to beat Millwall 3-2 at Hillsborough.

"I thought Chris O'Grady coming on probably turned it for us, he rattled them and I can't fault any of them," Jones said. "I thought it was a fantastic fight back and fantastic three points for us."

Wolves manager Stale Solbakken vowed to use the ?24.75 million reaped from the sales of Matt Jarvis and Steven Fletcher to strengthen his squad after his side drew 1-1 with Derby.

"We have to try to bring in some players to increase the competition," he said.

"We will try to get in replacements for Jarvis and Fletcher in the next few days.

"I think we are trying to do the right things and we are working on that. But we also have a wage structure that should be held in the right way."

Lee Clark's miserable start to life as Birmingham manager continued in Saturday's late game as his team went down 2-0 to rejuvenated Watford.

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

Bless Their Hearts Mom: Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

Updated Product Review: Nexus 7 Tablet

I really should title this one, part TWO of my original review of my new Nexus 7 Tablet (can I get a shout out to Staples for having an excellent electronics department?), as now that I've had time to play with use it. Now that I've gotten alot of use of it, I wanted to share some of the really cool things that I LOVE about it.?

First, it has really make me MISS my Android phone intently! For those who have not used Android, it is much more intuitive and user friendly of a platform than iphone. Everything has been simplified to one step, versus the 3-4 of iphone. Ever try setting a song from your computer as a ringtone on iphone? 2 programs and 5 steps, versus move from computer to phone and set in Android. ?The Nexus 7 has the new Android Jellybean and it is uber fast, responsive and beyond easy to use!?

I'm going to show you some screen shots (which you can take by merely depressing the power and down volume buttons at the same time, the device clicks and see the small screenshot to make sure you captured what you wanted to) and show you what wonders are on this phone!

Starting when you turn on the phone, you can set a password lock or a facial recognition lock. I love the facial lock, but with other family members using the tablet, I opted for a password. It only takes a couple of seconds to enter, but it keeps strangers from accessing my data, when I'm in a public place!
nexus right screen
You can set your screensaver to how ever you want it, including your favorite picture. I've kept the recent entertainment (Google books, music and magazines) tab as a front cover, for now. After I really involved in the tablet, I will probably change them. When you slide the screen left, you get the second home screen (see above picture), with the Google Play recommendations. You can click to like the suggestion, or to remove it, and a new one will come up. Google takes this info and the next time you log on, offers more content for you.
nexus google now screen
Or you can open the Google Now cards, by simply swiping up from the bottom bar?and get your local weather, traffic, sports news, public transit and flight info (picture above)! Yup, all at one swipe! Perfect for getting what you need to know BEFORE you get dressed for the day! This is perfect for those who are always on the go for business!?

nexus apps screen
When you hit the app button, all your apps are shown (picture above). This makes it really quick to go to one of your apps, say Gallery (photos) or Game (say Mah-Jong), without having to put them on one of your home screens. They are all alphabetical, so it's quick to find them!
nexus notification bar screen

But say you downloaded an app, and want to open it, but you just got a call about an email you need to open? Up on the top bar on the left, you'll see small icons pop up as email comes in, you download an app, update an app, or publish say a post to Blogger (see picture above) . All you have to do to open one of them is to swipe the bar down, find the item you want and click it. Yup it's THAT simple to switch from an app to your email. Want to go back to the app? Repeat with the bar, OR you can go to the previous apps bottom 'go' button. And there are all your recent apps (picture below) ! You can scroll up and down and find the one you want. And BAMM, you can be back where you were before you went to check the email! Easy peasy!?

nexus recent apps screen
The Google voice search has been really amazing. It is a super time saver and I've found myself using the voice type command ALOT. Say you have a blog post idea, but are at the school waiting on your child's basketball practice to end. if you've got wifi access, all you have to do is start a post, click on the microphone on the keyboard, and start talking. Your text will appear, you can save the post, and later you can edit it at home and publish it. AND you can use the Google voice wherever you use a keyboard, including email and Facebook!?

otg cableWhile having no removable SD card gives the tablet some limitations. By buying a USB OTG (On The Go) cable (on the left, which allows you to connect ANY usb device to your tablet), and Stickmount and ES File Explorer apps (both free in Google Play store), you can transfer files back and forth from the tablet and any USB memory device, like a thumb drive or back up hard drive.?

You can also bluetooth files VERY easily. I've transferred numerous files back and forth to my laptop, with no problem! If you have a bluetooth printer, you can also send files to it, when you go to share. This has worked wonderfully so far! I also have a Brother computer label printer, and the tablet works great with it, and the Brother app, so I can print out labels in any room, and not be tied down to the computer! Can I get a woo-hoo?

The other items you will need for your tablet will be a screen cleaner or film cover, and a carrying case. Though I have found I'm still debating on type of case, but I definitely want something I can put into my purse easily. Regular headphones work great with the tablet as well, for covert listening, but I highly recommend stereo Android ones, for better sound.

Additionally, if you will be working off-line on business documents, then you need to download one of the office apps, so you have word type document makers, as the Google Drive is great, but only accessible with wi-fi. It really comes down to doing a little research to see what apps you should download for YOUR needs. And naturally there is some trial and error, to see which ones you prefer. Luckily most of them have free trials, or free apps, to save you money! When you purchase the Nexus 7, you do get $25 credit to the Google Play store, as soon as you set up your account! That was pretty cool to me, as it enabled me to download a genealogy app that work with my Legacy Family Tree program on my home computer. It is so easy now to take the tablet with me, and if a genealogy questions comes up, I can pull up my ENTIRE genealogy file!?

Seriously, I use my tablet around the house ALL the time- it is easier than lugging around the laptop, and easier to read than the smart phone. The iphone has been relegated to pretty much a phone and alarm clock. I only use the laptop for loading pictures into blog posts, or if I have to cut and paste alot of info (the tablet and I haven't quite worked out the clipboard to my satisfaction- it works, but I can never get clipboard to clear when I need it to, I know it's operator error, just need to figure out the right app to help!?

If you are a busy mom on the go, busy professional, or technology craver, then the Nexus 7 tablet is definitely for you! Check it out, you'll want your own too!
