Stalingrad gets name back on days marking battle

MOSCOW (AP) ? The southern Russian city where the Red Army decisively turned back Nazi forces in a key World War II battle will once again be known as Stalingrad, at least on the days commemorating the victory, the regional legislature declared Thursday.

The city was renamed Volgograd in 1961 as part of the Soviet Union's rejection of dictator Joseph Stalin's personality cult. But the name Stalingrad is inseparable with the historic battle, which was among the bloodiest in history with combined losses of nearly 2 million people.

Regional lawmakers' decision to use the historic name in city statements on Feb. 2, the day of the Nazi defeat, as well as several other war-related dates each year, has angered many in Russia where Stalin's name and legacy continues to cause fiery disputes nearly 60 years after his death.

Russia's human rights ombudsman Vladimir Lukin sharply criticized the move, saying it should be declared void by court.

"This is an insult of the memory of those who died," he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Nikolai Levichev, a senior federal lawmaker with the leftist Just Russia party, condemned the restoration of the old city name, saying "it's blasphemous to rename the great Russian city after a bloody tyrant who killed millions of his fellow citizens." Levichev added that the country won the war "despite rather than thanks to" Stalin's leadership, whose errors multiplied the Soviet losses.

Stalin led the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. Communists and other hardliners credit him with leading the country to victory in World War II and making it a nuclear superpower, while others condemn his brutal purges that killed millions of people.

President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, has avoided open public praise or criticism of Stalin, but he has restored Soviet-era symbols and tried to soften public perceptions of the dictator. Kremlin critics have seen attempts to whitewash Stalin's image as part of Putin's rollback on democracy.

In recent years, many in Russia were outraged by government-sponsored school textbooks that painted Stalin in a largely positive light and the reconstruction of a Moscow subway station that restored old Soviet national anthem lyrics praising Stalin as part of its interior decoration.

In addition to the Volgograd legislature's move to restore the old name of the city, authorities in Volgograd, St. Petersburg and the Siberian city of Chita ordered images of Stalin to be put on city buses on Feb. 2 to commemorate the historic battle.

Yan Raczynski of Memorial, a leading Russia's human rights group, was quoted as saying by Interfax that the authorities' moves highlighted the nation's failure to "legally and politically recognize the crimes committed by the Bolshevik regime, particularly Stalin and his inner circle."

In turn, communists said the decision to restore the name of Stalingrad for just a few days each year is just a half-step. Communist lawmakers met with World War II veterans and sent a letter to Putin urging the government to fully rename the city, the party said in a statement.

But Sergei Zheleznyak, a top lawmaker with United Russia, the main Kremlin party dominating parliament, said there were no plans to fully restore the old name.

On Saturday, Russia plans extensive ceremonies to mark the 70th anniversary of the battle, which raged for half a year in 1942-43 with the Red Army resisting the Nazi onslaught in fierce street fighting and then encircling and capturing more than 100,000 Nazi soldiers.

Harrisburg schools saddled with debt and growing exodus to charter schools, says Veno

"It's time we called on corporate leaders in this community to invest in this community." - Gene Veno

HARRISBURG ? Two trends threaten Harrisburg School District's future financial success, said state-appointed chief recovery officer Gene Veno: increasing payments for past debt and a growing exodus of students to charter schools.

Veno presented an overview of the district's situation ? as he sees it ? during a public meeting Tuesday night, Jan. 29.

Only about 30 people attending the meeting, including school board members, presenters and the media, but Veno said, "It's not about the attendance; it's about the message."

That message was summarized in a brief history and two slides.

Veno explained that even though the school district closed five schools and furloughed one-third of its staff ? more than 500 people ? last year, this year's budget is still nearly 7 percent higher than before the cuts, and the the district is facing a budget deficit of $11.7 million.

Then he showed the slides.

Debt service payments this year are $15.3 million and expected to rise to $21.4 million during the next four years.

That's a structural problem that is neither the fault of the current school board nor easy to fix, said Veno.

The next slide showed a growing exodus of students ? more than 2,000 ? to charter schools during the past five years.

This year, Veno said, payments to charter schools cost $8.4 million.

And charter schools in this area, he noted, are just ramping up.

"I do not speak for or against charter schools," said Veno, but the reality in Harrisburg next year is $14.7 million "will go right off the budget" because of them.

That's a structural problem that can be fixed, he said, by improving the school district's image and performance.

Veno noted that the most recent standardized test results showed 38 percent of Harrisburg students are below basic in math, and 42 percent were below basic in reading.

Only 45 percent of students graduated last year.

To help the school district address its performance and come up with strategies to improve curriculum and teaching, Veno brought in former Secretary of Education Francis V. Barnes.

To help sort out finances and develop a funding strategy, he brought in financial experts from PFM. Among their responsibilities will be to conduct a forensic audit of the district's historic finances to find out exactly why things "aren't adding up" even after the cuts from last year.

"You can only cut so much," he said.

Veno has floated a 2.5 percent tax increase for the next school year, but even that will come nowhere near to plugging the budget hole. Nor will using the district's roughly $4 million fund balance, he said.

But simply raising taxes each year to fix that year's problem cannot continue to be the only solution.

"That has to stop," he said.

Another avenue, he said, would be going to the city's tax-exempt nonprofits and corporate leaders.

"It's time we called on corporate leaders in this community to invest in this community," Veno said. "Everyone in the community is accountable for the success" of Harrisburg School.

"I'm not here to sell a plan," Veno said. "We don't have one done yet."

But he pledged that as his team moved forward they would be thinking "outside the box, on top of the box, nowhere near the box."

Mindy McCready denies shooting boyfriend

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

The past few years haven't been easy for Mindy McCready; the country singer has dealt with drug addiction and jail, plus a protracted custody battle over her son with Billy McKnight. But Jan. 13, the day her boyfriend David Wilson died of a gunshot wound, was likely her lowest point in recent memory, as she told NBC's Andrea Canning on TODAY Tuesday.

"I have never gone through anything this painful," she said in an interview at her home in Little Rock, Ark. "He didn't just touch my heart, he touched my soul. He was my soulmate."

Wilson, a 34-year-old record producer, was initially rushed to the hospital earlier in January after suffering reportedly self-inflicted gunshot wound that did not immediately kill him. McCready was with him after the shooting. "I just started screaming, calling 911," she said. "I lay down next to him and just just pleaded with him not to die."

"He was responding," she added, saying he was only making "sounds," not words.

The investigation as to the cause of death remains open, and there are no suspects in the case (including McCready), Cleburne County Sheriff's Department said. Tests that will determine whether it was suicide or murder are due back in a few weeks.

But there remain lingering questions. McCready denied that Wilson, the father of her other son Zane, was having an affair, and explained that the bullet wasn't found until the next day because "it was in the dog's mouth."?

And when asked directly whether she shot Wilson, she was adamant: "Oh, my God, no. He was my life. We were each others' life."

Philip O Sullivan: From Private to Public

After going to private school for seven years, switching to a public school and going into my first year of high school was a scary experience for me. The transition is like going from living in a house out in the countryside where you know all your neighbors to an apartment in the city where there are lots of people. At private school, life is very different from public school. At my private school, the class sizes were very small and the atmosphere was very sheltered because everyone knew each other, and everyone trusted one another. By comparison, at my current school, the class sizes are huge.

One of the biggest adjustments in the transition from private to public was the social aspect. At my old school I knew all the kids in my class, and there were rarely any new kids. At my new school, there are so many kids and so many different types of people. The shift is massive. I prefer the public school because I get to meet more new people. At my old school, my class was tiny and there were only one or two new kids each year. I didn't dislike anyone in my class, but after a while one can get bored; new people are more interesting. Finding friends hasn't been a problem at my new school.

Another difference is extracurricular activities. Private school, for me, was like living in the country, where there are only a few things to do and almost everyone did them. Public school, on the other hand, is like going to the city where there seems to be an infinite number of things to do. Finding an extracurricular activity that you like is an important part of high school in the sense that in addition to school you have another leisure activity to do in your free time. Joining a club or sport helps you meet people and have an activity to do. At my private school, the opportunities were very limited and there weren't new people to meet when joining an activity -- but at public school, you're guaranteed to meet some new people and try something new.

There are also small differences, such as having to write my first and last name on worksheets. At my old school I was the only Philip, so on worksheets I just had to write my first name. At my new school, that's not the case, so for every worksheet I have to make sure I write my first and last name. Another thing is attendance. My old school was strict about being late, but not nearly as strict as DCPS. DCPS is very strict on attendance and the penalties for being late are harsh -- for example, if you are late to class more than three times per advisory quarter, your grade is lowered a letter. I don't struggle with being on time, but it's a little disconcerting to think of penalties. Another thing is the rules: My private school was like the neighborhood out in the country where everyone trusts each other and the rules are never really enforced because nobody breaks them. But in my new school, although people don't necessarily break the rules, but there are much stricter enforcements and punishments if it does happen. An example is hall passes. At my old school, nobody used hall passes because they weren't needed. Nobody needed a hall pass because there was no chance anyone would try to sneak off campus or try anything mischievous. At my new school, you need a hall pass whenever you have to leave class.

Overall, there is nothing to be scared of when switching schools. Nevertheless, I think the country-city switch has given me more opportunities both in and outside of school, and has given me another view on life. I'm grateful for both styles.

Torrey Smith, Ravens WR, Makes It To Super Bowl, Overcoming Adversity On The Way

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Torrey Smith overcame a variety of obstacles to become the deep threat the Baltimore Ravens needed to make it to the Super Bowl.

Smith helped his single mother raise her six other children by working after school as a teenager. Early this season, his second with the Ravens, tragedy struck less than 24 hours before Baltimore faced New England on Sept. 23: Smith's younger brother, Tevin Jones, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Virginia.

Smith left the team to join his family, then returned to catch six passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns in Baltimore's 31-30 victory.

Now Smith and the Ravens will play for the NFL championship against San Francisco this Sunday.

Smith has put his brother's death behind him, saying, "I'm just focused on playing football."

Misconceptions about a popular pet treat

Jan. 28, 2013 ? A popular dog treat could be adding more calories than pet owners realize, and possibly be contaminated by bacteria, according to a study published this month by researchers at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and the University of Guelph.

The treat in question: the "bully" or "pizzle stick." The American and Canadian researchers analyzed the caloric density and bacterial contamination of these popular items, made from the uncooked, dried penis of a bull or steer. They also administered a survey to pet owners to assess their knowledge of these treats.

The study, published in the January 2013 issue of the Canadian Veterinary Journal, examined 26 bully sticks purchased from retailers in the United States and Canada and made by different manufacturers.

A random subset of the 26 bully sticks was tested for caloric content. These bully sticks tested contained between nine to 22 calories per inch, meaning the average six inch stick packed 88 calories--nine percent of the daily calorie requirements for a 50-pound dog, and 30 percent of the daily calorie requirements for a 10-pound dog.

"While calorie information isn't currently required on pet treats or most pet foods, these findings reinforce that veterinarians and pet owners need to be aware of pet treats like these bully sticks as a source of calories in a dog's diet," said Lisa M. Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVN, professor of nutrition at TCSVM who is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.

Freeman was first author on the paper. Co-authors were J. Scott Weese, professor in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Guelph, and Nicol Janecko, a research associate at the Canadian university.

"With obesity in pets on the rise, it is important for pet owners to factor in not only their dog's food, but also treats and table food," Freeman added.

All 26 treats were tested for bacterial contaminants. One (4 percent) of the sticks was contaminated with Clostridium difficile; one (four percent) was contaminated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics; and seven (27 percent) were contaminated with Escherichia coli, including one tetracycline-resistant sample.

The number of treats sampled was small and not all of these bacterial strains have been shown to infect humans. However, the researchers advise all pet owners to wash their hands after touching such treats, as they would with any raw meat or raw meat diets. The very young, elderly, pregnant, immunocompromised and other high-risk individuals should avoid all contact with raw animal-product based treats and raw meat diets, note the scientists.

To learn more about veterinarian and pet owner perceptions of dog foods and treats, the research team developed a 20-question Web-based survey. The survey was posted online for public participation for 60 days and all responses were anonymous. It was completed by 852 adults from 44 states and six countries. Most respondents were female dog owners.

"We were surprised at the clear misconceptions pet owners and veterinarians have with pet foods and many of the popular raw animal-product based pet treats currently on the market," said Freeman. "For example, 71 percent of people feeding bully sticks to their pets stated they avoid by-products in pet foods, yet bully sticks are, for all intents and purposes, an animal by-product."

Another surprising finding was the large number of people who did not know what bully sticks actually were. A higher proportion of veterinarians (62 percent) were able to correctly identify the source of bully sticks as bull penis compared to general respondents (44 percent). Twenty-three percent of the respondents fed their dogs bully sticks.

Further research with a larger sample size is needed to determine whether the calorie content and contamination rate found in this study is representative of all bully sticks, or other types of pet treats, according to the authors.

Israel's comatose Sharon showing brain activity

(AP) ? A team of Israeli and U.S. scientists say new tests on comatose former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon show significant brain activity.

Ben-Gurion University on Sunday said Sharon responded to external stimuli at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.

He was shown pictures of his family and listened to recordings of his son's voice while undergoing a special brain imaging scan. The university said "significant brain activity was observed ... indicating appropriate processing of these stimulations."

However, Sharon remains in a deep coma.

Sharon, 84, led Israel from 2001 until suffering a stroke in 2006. Since then, he has been in a vegetative state, connected to a respirator.

Sharon was a storied military officer who fought in three wars before entering politics. He unilaterally withdrew Israeli troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? A well-to-do real estate broker at a high-end Manhattan firm has pleaded not guilty to a rape charge brought from a young woman he met on the Internet.

As WCBS 880?s Irene Cornell reported, Lakhinder Vohra, 47, met the woman through a Web site called SeekingArrangement.com. The woman claimed Vohra attacked her on her first visit to his Wall Street apartment.

  • WCBS 880's Irene Cornell Reports

The Web site caters to men like Vohra, who works for the firm Nest Seekers described as ?sugar daddies with lots of cash.? Vohra used the handle ?Daddylovesarmcandy? on the Web site and claimed to be worth as much as $10 million, according to a New York Post report.

The 26-year-old victim claimed that he threw her face down on the bed, placed his hand on her back, and raped her, the newspaper reported.

Vohra?s attorney compared the situation to that of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the disgraced French politician and former head of the International Monetary Fund who was accused of rape by his maid in 2011. The criminal case against Strauss-Kahn was dismissed, and he has since filed a lawsuit against his accuser, Nafissatou Diallo.

In Vohra?s case, attorney Mike Saint-Pre told the court: ?What we have here is a case of extortion. Even as the woman was leaving the apartment, she was attempting to extort money from Vohra.?

Vohra was ordered held on $10,000 bail on Friday, the newspaper reported.

Federal website hijacked to avenge activist

5 hrs.

WASHINGTON???The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch (http://www.ussc.gov), was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online, and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the agency's?Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."

Hours after the hijacking, pages on the USSC.gov website were available only sporadically.

All About Health Supplement Manufacturers

Health supplements are in demand these days. As medical science advances, so has the market for fitness and health supplements. Nowadays there are supplements for weight loss, for reducing obesity, for controlling diabetes, ensuring development of muscles and so forth. No matter what form of health problem one has there is a supplement that advertises itself as a sure way of helping people get rid of their health or fitness problem. Nowadays there are even hormone supplements that claim to remove hormonal deficiencies and symptoms that they bring about.

Health Supplements Manufacturer Markets

There are pharmaceutical companies that are marketing health supplements and many have established a market for themselves. Many product brands are becoming well known and they are relied upon by people in meeting their health and fitness needs. However, when one goes to purchase such health supplements from retail stores, they come highly priced. Thus, not many people can afford to buy such supplements from the medical or fitness store.

Direct Marketing Online

In order to tap into a large consumer segment and to make their products more affordable, nowadays most health supplement manufacturers are marketing their products online. That makes these products easily available and at wholesale prices as well unlike from retail stores. The amount that one can order is flexible and thus, even individual requirements can be met. What?s more, such manufacturers offer discounts and exceptional rates from time to time. That makes such supplements sell like hot cakes as payment options are also convenient. Nowadays online sale of health supplements is on the rise.

Innovative Marketing Online

There is a way of increasing sales of health supplements. That is to make consumers aware of what such a supplement is for and how one can benefit from the intake of such supplements. Thus, many kinds of online marketing strategies are adopted in order to increase awareness of the use of supplements. There are blogs and forums on such supplements where all common queries are addressed. The components of such supplements and their use and benefits are highlighted in such articles. Also, the limitation of such products and the need to seek medical advice before one takes up such supplements is also mentioned on responsible websites.

Beware Of Fraud Ventures

The main limitation of online market of fitness supplements is that, it is hard to differentiate reliable brands from frauds. When it is a question of one?s health, one needs to take the necessary precautions before they order such supplements online. The way to certify the genuineness of such companies is to seek out customer testimonials on independent forums in order to be convinced about the effectiveness of such supplements. Also, the composition and the ingredients of such supplements and whether they will have adverse side effects or not need to be ascertained before one takes up such supplements. Responsible manufacturers will advise their clients to seek medical advice as well before they start taking in any such supplement, especially hormonal supplements.

In spite of prevailing doubts about the integrity of health supplement manufacturers, the rising cost of raw materials and new regulations, the health supplement industry is projected to rise by 4-6% in the next year. The spring valley vitamins are easy to order when shopping online.

5 Questions to Ask about Marriage Readiness | Marriage Gems

engaged by Surachi freedigitalphotos.netIf you ask 10 people about what issues are most important in being ready for marriage, you will get 10 answers. That being said, some issues/questions will come up more frequently. Analyzing your motivations and timing for marriage is definitely worth your time and attention. Author Grace Pamer was nice enough to offer her take on 5 questions you should ask yourself if you are considering marriage (below). I would suggest there are other issues which you already know are key to marriage?things like similar values, discussing whether you want to have children, determining if you have a similar vision for life, and things of this sort.

While some couples want to be more settled before marriage (in career, education, financially, etc.), others are more willing to figure out the journey together. My husband was hoping to have his ideal job before we got engaged, but after five years of dating I was ready for commitment. He decided to take a ?leap of faith? as he called it, which paid off when he received an offer for his perfect job while we were on our honeymoon.

While some of these issues depend on your situation, many of Grace?s questions I would say are mandatory?things like monogamy and readiness for commitment. But I don?t want to give away all the secrets, so without further ado, here is Grace?s guest post:

5 Questions to Ask Yourself if You are Considering Marriage

by Grace Pamer

It?s a sad fact, but today too many people are no longer strangers to the concept of divorce. For some, it could have been their own parents who divorced when they were young. Others may have stood up at a best friend?s wedding, only to see the relationship dissolve a few years later. The point is that dissolution of marriage is not a rare occurrence today ? it can leave many individuals questioning if they are truly ready for this commitment, even when deeply in love with their partners.

The first step to warming those cold feet is to recognize that getting married has nothing to do with statistics or the relationship health of your friends and family. Being ready for marriage comes down to only one thing ? you. It is an inward journey you must take, having nothing to do with the external world or experiences of others.

The following points are five ways I believe you will know if you are ready for marriage:

1. Are You Ready For A Monogamous Relationship?

One thing that is expected from marriage is monogamy. Many people don?t commit, at least not until later in life, because they feel they aren?t ready to make such a commitment for the rest of their lives.

People who are ready for marriage want a special someone to share their lives with. They don?t view monogamy as a sacrifice ? they are happy and secure with the idea of having a perfect lover and a friend, all in one person, until death do they part.

2. Are Large Ambitions And Goals Met?

Loving couples can happily endure anything, so this doesn?t imply that life stops once you are married. But if you have a large list of desires you wish to accomplish before saying ?I do? it is important to acknowledge that.

Examples would be going through medical school, spending a year abroad or any other large time commitment that could start a marriage off on the wrong foot. Again, couples can accomplish any of these things together. But if you have a large list of independent goals you wish to accomplish solo, then take time to be certain now is the right time to be married.

3. Are You Ready For Commitment?

Healthy couples aren?t threatened when one partner spends time with other friends and family, as long as time is also devoted to the relationship as well. But being married does involve more time with one person. Never being home, coming home late after your spouse is in bed each night ? these things will take a toll.

Commitment isn?t a bad word. It is about love and respect for your lover and friend. Building a life together, sharing a home ? these are good things with the right person. However, if you find it hard to imagine not being out every evening, spending weekends with friends or being accountable to another person, then this might not be the right time to consider marriage.

4. Do You Feel External Pressure?

When you think of marriage, if there is any hint of pressure to say, ?I do,? you need to take time and acknowledge that feeling. When considering marriage, pressure can come in many forms. One in particular could be media?s influence, as we are constantly bombarded with?marriage proposal stories?and news of the latest Hollywood engagement.

Your own age might make you feel like a clock is ticking and time is running out. Family or friends might be pressuring you to walk down the aisle. You may have been with your lover a very long time, feeling obligated to move on to the next step. None of the above should be considered reasons to get married. There shouldn?t be any feeling of pressure involved in your decision, only enthusiasm and excitement about marrying your best friend.

5. Is It Based On Love Or Need?

The final step in analyzing if you are ready for marriage is the most difficult one ? being brutally honest with yourself. Many people get married for the wrong reasons, those reasons being buried deep inside their own personalities and underlying fears.

If your self-esteem is low, you fear being alone later in life, seek validation and self-worth from others or cannot stand spending time with just yourself, these issues must be addressed before you can be ready for marriage. A healthy relationship requires two healthy individuals, ones who both contribute to the marriage. Depending on another to validate your worth cannot sustain a relationship over time.

Being ready for marriage entails wanting to share your life with someone you love ? it isn?t about needing someone to give your life merit.

What's A Business Without A Website? | Dadycandoit.Com

Well? What was the first thing you thought of??Bankrupt? Stupid? Behind the times??Surely this must be a trick question. It?s 2013. Every business has a website. Right?

It blows my mind, but last year, an Ad-ology study found, 46 percent of small businesses surveyed said they did not have a website.

What are they waiting for?

Granted, the number of small businesses with websites took a jump in the past two years, from 33 percent to 45 percent, a Discover study showed. How many more small businesses will join them this year? It?s unclear.

In the Discover study, 46 percent of respondents said it?s a myth that every company needs a website. And they?re right?companies that don?t want to be successful certainly shouldn?t spend the time and money to develop a company site. So every company doesn?t need one.

Yes, you can still be found in online phone directories and on Google maps and such, without a company site. But is that impressing prospects? Does your company have LinkedIn or Facebook page, without a company site to link to? I?m doubtful.

It?s possible many of these skeptics plan to cave in and put up a website this year. A VistaPrint Small Business Survey last year showed 32 percent of small-business owners surveyed said they would work on Web development if they had more time or more money to devote to it. Perhaps as business improves, we?ll see more sites sprout.

The no-website attitude reminds me of a prospective copywriting client I interviewed recently. He was dying to hire me to write content for his website?as soon as he landed his first client. How would he do that without the site to sell the company?s services? He wouldn?t?I?ve never heard back from him.

If you?re on the fence about having a website, I have one question for you: How many big, successful companies don?t have a website? I?m betting none. That?s because a company website is just a basic, must-have marketing tool for the 21st Century.?

Even better, online it?s a level playing field for small business. You can make your company look just as good as bigger competitors, for very little money. Why would you pass up that chance?

If you don?t have a company website, weigh in here. Why don?t you have one? Do you have plans to get one in 2013? Do you believe small businesses don?t need websites? How do customers find you online, or do you not get customers through the internet? Leave a comment and let us know.

Mexican president vows to end hunger for millions

LAS MARGARITAS, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto launched a campaign against hunger on Monday, pledging to transform the lives of nearly 7.5 million of the country's poorest, though he gave few details, prompting criticism that the plan was a "rehash" of old policies.

Tackling the poverty that blights Mexico has been a priority for many presidents of Latin America's second-biggest economy, and it was one of the first pledges Pena Nieto made when he launched his election campaign at the end of March.

The 46-year-old president outlined a four-point plan to tackle hunger in 400 of Mexico's roughly 2,500 municipalities, urging community action, local government responsibility and pledging to strengthen agricultural production in afflicted areas.

However, he did not detail the cost of the plan.

"It's painful and saddening that there are still Mexicans suffering with hunger here in Chiapas, and, it has to be said, in every corner of Mexico," said Pena Nieto, who took office on December 1.

"This is not a handout program; it's not just about giving out food to those that need it," he added.

Pena Nieto was speaking in Las Margaritas in the poor southern state of Chiapas, a town that was a hotbed of resistance to the federal government in the 1990s.

Las Margaritas was also a stronghold of the Zapatistas, a leftist revolutionary movement that rose up against the government in 1994, partly in protest against Mexico's signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States and Canada.

Pena Nieto has won praise for pushing hard on a variety of reforms since taking office, but analysts were not convinced on Monday, saying the anti-hunger plan was vague and seemed much like existing policies.

"I would say it's a disappointment because it's very thin on details," said Susan Parker, an economist at Mexico City's CIDE university, adding that it failed to address what would happen to older poverty-fighting programs.

"It's a rehash," said Jorge Villasenor, an economist at the University of Guadalajara. "He's just dusted off policies that have been around since the mid-90s."

Pena Nieto pushed the 2013 budget through Congress barely a week after taking office and gained broad support for a landmark education bill, having convinced political rivals to sign a pact to work with him on a wide-reaching reform agenda.

Former President Felipe Calderon presided over a sharp rise in poverty, and nearly 60 million Mexicans - or around half the population - are now considered poor. That is roughly the same percentage as in the 1980s.

Pena Nieto has praised former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's successful social policies, which lifted around 20 million people out of poverty between 2003 and 2009.

See Jupiter and moon shine close together

Stargazers looking up as darkness falls on Monday will notice an eye catching pairing-off between two of the brightest objects in the nighttime sky, weather permitting.?

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. 'The Blob' boosts northern lights

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: "The Blob" from the sun has come and gone, sparking nothing more than beautiful views of the northern lights ? and there could be more blobs to come.

    2. Scientist proposes to girlfriend amid aurora
    3. NASA 'Mohawk Guy' to march in inaugural parade
    4. 'Planetary parks' could protect space wilderness

The moon, appearing as a waxing gibbous phase, 78 percent illuminated, will appear to stand close below a very bright, non-twinkling, silvery "star." But it won't be a star that will be keeping the moon company on America's Inauguration Night, but the largest planet in our solar system: Jupiter.

Across much of the United States and southern Canada, this will be closest that the moon and Jupiter will appear relative to each other until the year 2026. On Monday night, the moon will be about of 248,700 miles (400,500 kilometers) from Earth, while Jupiter will be nearly 1,664 times farther out in space at a distance of 413.8 million miles (665.9 million km).?

During Monday's stargazing event, observers have the chance to see what astronomers call an appulse ? a very close approach of the moon to Jupiter. An appulse is a phenomenon caused by perspective only. There is no close physical approach in space between the two objects involved.? Astronomers insist that appulses have no direct effect on the Earth.?

The moon, moving around the Earth in an easterly direction at roughly its own diameter each hour, will creep slowly toward and ultimately pass just below the giant planet. Jupiter, meanwhile, will be shining about three times brighter than the brightest star, Sirius, offering a commanding sight for stargazers despite its close proximity to the moon.

[ Amazing Stargazing Photos for January ]

Although it will be the moon that will be moving in Jupiter's general direction, the illusion will be that it is Jupiter that is moving, appearing to glide slowly along on a path taking it above the moon. A similar illusion occurs during a lunar eclipsewhen the dark shadow of Earth appears to be slowly creeping across the face of the moon. In reality it is the moon itself slowly creeping into the Earth's shadow.?

After their closest approach Monday, the moon will spend the balance of the night moving slowly away to the left (east), leaving Jupiter behind.??

The table accompanying this guide gives local times of Jupiter's closest approach to the moon's upper edge on the night of Jan. 21 for 20 major cities across the United States and Canada. Separation is given in terms of a fraction of an angular degree. The width of the moon is equal to one-half (0.50) of a degree.?

Examples: From Boston, closest approach between Jupiter and the moon is at 11 p.m. EST. Separation is 0.62 of a degree or one and a quarter times the apparent width of the moon from Jupiter to the moon?s upper edge. From Miami, closest approach is at 11:02 p.m. EST, the separation is listed as 0.33 of a degree or two-thirds of a moon's width separating Jupiter from the moon's upper edge.???

From Halifax, Nova Scotia, an asterisk indicates that the closest approach between Jupiter and the moon comes after midnight on Tuesday.?

And here?s another interesting illusion: For many places in the United States and Canada, Jupiter will be separated from the moon's upper rim by at least a half-degree (0.50) ? equal to the apparent width of the moon. And yet visually to the eye, Jupiter will appear to be much closer; in fact, seemingly impossible that the gap that separates Jupiter from the moon's edge would be large enough to accommodate an object that is equal to the size of the moon itself.?

[ How to Observe the Moon (Infographic) ]

Even from places like Boston, Montreal and Edmonton where the gap exceeds a half degree, Jupiter will appear much closer relative to the moon?s edge. Check it out for yourself.

If you own a small telescope, there are several stargazing opportunities to get a close look at Jupiter during Monday night's appearance.

According to Sky & Telescope magazine, Jupiter's Great Red Spot, a colossal storm bigger than the Earth, can be visible in amateur telescopes from 9 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. EST (6 p.m. to 7:40 p.m. PST/0100 to 0240 GMT). And Jupiter's icy moon Europa will cross in front of the planet, as seen from Earth, between 8:13 p.m. and 10:37 p.m. EST (5:13 p.m. and 7:37 p.m. PST/2213 and 2337 GMT). The best time for amateur astronomers to try and spot Europa's shadow on Jupiter via telescope will be between 10:22 p.m. and 12:46 a.m. EST (7:22 p.m. and 9:46 p.m. PST/0222 and 0546 GMT), the magazine's stargazing experts said.

"You'll also get an opportunity to attempt an unusual feat: spotting Jupiter in the late afternoon, before the Sun sets," said Tony Flanders, associate editor at Sky & Telescope magazine and host of Skyweek on PBS, in a statement. "First locate the moon medium-high in the east; then look a few moon-widths left or lower left of the Moon for Jupiter. It should be easy to spot with binoculars if the air is clear."

Lastly, if you are lucky to be situated across a broad swath of central South America including French Polynesia, Pitcairn and Galapagos Islands an even more spectacular event will take place, when the moon will hide or eclipse Jupiter (called an occultation).

But don't fret if you miss the moon's occultation of Jupiter Monday night. Another one will occur on March 17, according to Sky and Telescope.

Editor's note: If you snap an amazing photo of Jupiter and the moon, or any other night sky view, that you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, send photos, comments and your name and location to managing editor Tariq Malik at spacephotos@space.com.
